About the School 2

An eight-part series introducing the school in the present as we review the 47 years since its foundation.

What kind of school is it?

1st year students' Tapestry Weaving class
Kawashima Textile School is a school that teaches textiles, with handweaving as the main focus. For 47 years since its foundation, the school has been operating in its own unique style.

The school's strength is the informative, small group classes, centered on hands-on training. We value creating beautiful fabric based on solid technical skills and expression skills, with each student heightening their creativity using their own artistic sensitivity.

People of different ages motivated to learn weaving gather from all around the world.

About the School 1

We are starting a new series introducing Kawashima Textile School (KTS). We would like to introduce the school in the present as we review the 47 years since its foundation, starting with an eight-part "About the School" series, with topics such as how it began, the courses, and its contents.

How did the school start?

Entrance, 1973

Atelier, 1973

Kawashima Textile School was founded in 1973 to commemorate the 130th anniversary of Kawashima Textile Manufacturers Ltd. (now Kawashima Selkon Textile Co., Ltd.). It was a time when values were shifting, with people reexamining their lives, and pursuing richness of heart and mind, under the economic circumstances of mass production and mass consumption.

We are surrounded by woven fabric in our daily lives, from interior fabrics such as curtains, general goods such as towels, to the clothing that we wear. With woven fabric, which exists so close to us, maybe we could build respectful relationships between our lives and objects, and also through woven fabric, connect internationally. That was the idea behind the founding of Kawashima Textile School.
